SUMMARY, EXPLANATION AND LIMITATIONS:
The human herpes virus type 8 (HHV-8) is probably the cause for Kaposi’s sarcoma. DNA-sequences of HHV-8 were found in Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions, primary effusion lymphomas and in multicentric Castleman’s disease. Polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridisation were used for these studies. This anti-HHV-8 antibody labels the latent nuclear antigen protein via immunohistochemistry. The latent nuclear antigen protein of HHV-8 (LNA, LNA-1, LANA-1), encoded by viral gene ORF73, is a nuclear antigen which is constantly expressed in all cells latently infected by the virus. It has a molecular weight of 222 or 234 kDa. The detection of HHV-8 via immunohistochemistry can be helpful for an interpretation of the results in context of the morphological features.
